The white-tailed eagle, also known as the sea eagle, is one of Europe’s largest and most striking birds of prey. With its massive wingspan of over 2 meters and sharp, piercing eyes, it commands attention as it soars over coastal cliffs and lakes. However, decades of habitat destruction and poisoning drove this species to the brink of extinction in the mid-20th century.
In a sanctuary in the Scottish Highlands, a white-tailed eagle named Highland became a beacon of hope for the species’ recovery. Highland was found tangled in a fishing net with a severely injured wing. Sanctuary staff worked tirelessly to rehabilitate him, carefully tending to his injuries and ensuring he regained his strength. After months of care, Highland was released into the wild, but his story didn’t end there. Rangers discovered that he had successfully established a territory and paired with a mate, producing multiple chicks.
Highland’s offspring have spread across Scotland, helping to re-establish the white-tailed eagle population. His story highlights how sanctuaries not only rescue individual animals but also play a crucial role in reversing the decline of endangered species.
